We've had snow, then no snow, then snow again. At one point we had over a foot and a half in the yard. It was mostly gone then It snowed about a half an inch, now it's melting again in rain. But the red winged blackbirds are back so it is officially spring. I was trying to photograph birds that I hoped would land in a particular place with other stuff around that spot that could confuse autofocus. WAY BACK in film days you turned the focusing ring on the lens and if you wanted to 'lock' the focus, you just left it there. Simple. OMD has a half-press hybrid focus system that autofocuses on a target area of a size and position that you set then allows you to adjust the focus to precisely where you want it using the focusing ring and "focus peaking" (colored outlines around the things that are in focus) then lock it separately so that when you trip the shutter it doesn't re-autofocus. While my aging eyes appreciate autofocus, there are times when I long for the simplicity of true manual focus. The focus-peeking is nice though. I don't know why they couldn't just combine that with full manual focusing.Jimhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17167194624190478584noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23770853.post-10065485050089152062023-03-25T16:42:40.061-04:002023-03-25T16:42:40.061-04:00Like you Jim, I generally set my cameras to the po...Like you Jim, I generally set my cameras to the positions I use for most things. In addition to photography he played both clarinet and cello (I have his cello, no longer playable without a lot of repair) in a number of community orchestras, he had a crystal radio and he once built a motor launch with a friend. They kept it on Lake Ontario which could be reached by trolley back then. Sadly I never knew him. He died the spring of the year I was born but his influence has shaped my life anyway.Jimhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17167194624190478584noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23770853.post-55646815689408060262020-10-13T10:31:33.582-04:002020-10-13T10:31:33.582-04:00Hey Jim, I really enjoyed reading this account and...Hey Jim, I really enjoyed reading this account and seeing your shots of the falls. You wrote with humour but I most definitely sensed your dismay from falling, getting drenched and unscheduled thumb surgery. Those are the smoothest falls I've ever seen (haven't seen many, but I think those are special). The cardinal photo is lovely regardless, but you're likely not satisfied because - dare I say it - you're a perfectionist in your photography. When I shot over the beaverdam I was with a friend who was in a plastic kayak but he didn't dare try to shoot over the dam so he went to shore and got out to carry around it. He was wearing "Wellies" (rubber chore boots) so that he could step out in the water close to shore but he misjudged and got his boots full of water. He had to take them off and pour the water out. Sadly, I wasn't quick enough to get a photo of that. I'm sure he was pleased that I didn't.Jimhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17167194624190478584noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23770853.post-57388000220219258822019-04-26T08:06:05.081-04:002019-04-26T08:06:05.081-04:00I enjoyed reading this, Jim. Both of my water mishaps happened on land, but I do chance taking my Pentax out in the canoe, an 18' Wenonah that requires two paddlers. We don't do anything daring, mostly because of my phobia of setting foot in murky waters. Going over a beaver dam would give me the willies! That said, I greatly admire and appreciate what you do. You have to discard the color information first: Image>Mode>Greyscale. Once that is done, use Image>Mode>Duotone to select the tones you wish to use using the eyedropper. You can pick any hue including black or white or a Pantone hue. In PS duotone you can manipulate the curve of each tone as well. It takes a bit of experimentation and to save it as an editable duotoned file it has to be in PSD format. If you don't care about re-editing it, use Image>Mode>RGB COlor to make it savable in TIFF or JPG.Jimhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17167194624190478584noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23770853.post-51668320467589284962019-04-17T07:59:32.707-04:002019-04-17T07:59:32.707-04:00Can I ask how this toning would be translated into...Can I ask how this toning would be translated into Photoshop? It is the same 'virtual copy' of the original photo. For one JPG I had the toning turned off, for the other I turned it on, so the only difference is that the first is a neutral B&W and the second is brownish B&W. One of the beauties of Lightroom is the ability to make multiple virtual copies that are really nothing more than a set of instructions on how to display the photo without actually changing anything in the original file. So, I have both. I can choose when I print it which set of instructions to apply.
Jimhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17167194624190478584noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23770853.post-54745406982457223822019-03-16T16:05:29.723-04:002019-03-16T16:05:29.723-04:00The difference is VERY subtle, but I think I do li...The difference is VERY subtle, but I think I do like the toned one better. The original looks to me like it could be an old photo, meaning that it reminds me of my grandfather's photos taken in before 1918. The toned one looks to me as though it's a very good recent grayscale. Does that make any sense? I really had to see the enlarged versions side by side (back and forth) to ascertain any difference between them. Keep the toned one!
WizenedWizardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16289650543268850996noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23770853.post-77846114424406228422019-01-22T16:58:53.913-05:002019-01-22T16:58:53.913-05:00A voice from the past to JB:
